Iganga District is mourning former Woman Member of Parliament Olivia Kabaale Kwagala, popularly known as Muliro Mulege, who has died at the age of 57 after a prolonged illness.

Kwagala died on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where she had been receiving treatment for several months.

Iganga District NRM chairperson Haji Abubaker Walubi confirmed her death, saying the party would engage its national secretariat to mobilise support for the family’s burial arrangements.

Walubi said President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni had been contributing towards Kwagala’s medical expenses after the party brought her deteriorating health to his attention.

“We informed President Yoweri Museveni during a thanksgiving ceremony of the Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, and he started contributing towards her medical bills,” Walubi told New Vision.

Kwagala entered Parliament in 2011 after winning the Iganga District Woman MP seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket. She served one term, leaving Parliament in 2016.

She defeated Beatrice Magoola, the mother of singer Racheal Magoola, in the election that took her to Parliament.

During her tenure, Kwagala championed several development demands for Iganga, including the construction of a modern market in Iganga Municipality and the upgrading of Iganga General Hospital to referral hospital status.

Her involvement in community development reportedly continued after leaving Parliament, with former local leaders crediting her with lobbying for boreholes and supporting disadvantaged children through bursaries.

Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda also mourned the former legislator, describing her death as a loss to her family and the wider Iganga community.

“Her death is a great loss to her family, the people of Iganga District, and all those who knew and worked with her,” Babalanda said.

The family is expected to announce burial arrangements in the coming days.

Kwagala’s death adds to the recent loss of former legislators, following the deaths of Peter Okwera and Charles Matovu.
