Uganda Airlines has received a Boeing 737-800 aircraft under a wet lease arrangement with Ethiopian Airlines as the national carrier moves to strengthen its operations and improve service reliability across its network.

The airline confirmed the development in a statement shared on X, describing the aircraft as the first of two leased planes expected to join the fleet.

“Today, we officially welcomed the first of two newly leased aircraft into the Uganda Airlines fleet with a wet-leased Boeing 737-800 operated in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines,” Uganda Airlines said.

The airline added that the aircraft would improve operational flexibility and support efforts to expand connectivity on both regional and international routes.

“This addition strengthens our operations and enhances flexibility as we continue to deliver greater connectivity across our network,” the statement added.

A wet lease arrangement allows an airline to lease an aircraft together with crew, maintenance and insurance from another operator, helping carriers quickly increase capacity and maintain schedules.

The Ministry of Works and Transport welcomed the arrival of the aircraft, saying it would help address operational challenges that have recently affected some routes.

“Congrats, Uganda Airlines, on receiving the wet leased Boeing 737-800. This helps to mitigate some hiccups on our routes,” the ministry posted on X.

The new aircraft is expected to support Uganda Airlines as it continues expanding its route network and rebuilding capacity amid rising passenger demand.

Uganda Airlines currently operates flights to several destinations in Africa, the Middle East and Europe, with government positioning the carrier as a strategic driver for tourism, trade and regional connectivity.

The collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines is also expected to strengthen operational efficiency as Uganda Airlines works toward long-term fleet expansion and improved customer service.
