Two National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters have been granted bail by a court in Masaka in a case in which four members of the opposition party face charges including aggravated robbery.

The beneficiaries are Mugumya Gadaffi and Wakabi Smart, while Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi remain in custody over separate charges.

The four are facing allegations arising from an incident in which the prosecution accuses them of robbing a journalist of a mobile phone and a sweater. Previous court records indicate that the accused have denied the charges.

The bail terms reportedly ranged from Shs5 million to Shs50 million, with the court requiring the respective sureties to meet the prescribed conditions.

Mugumya and Wakabi are expected to be released once the bail conditions are fulfilled.

Mutwe and Kivumbi, however, will remain in custody because they have separate pending cases, including charges before other courts.

The four have been involved in prolonged court proceedings over the Masaka case. In an earlier bail decision, the High Court in Masaka declined to release them, with the court citing concerns including possible interference with investigations and witnesses.

The prosecution alleges that the incident occurred during a burial in Lwengo District, where journalists had gone to cover the event. Court records indicate that the accused are alleged to have used knives and sticks during the incident.

The latest bail decision allows Mugumya and Wakabi to leave custody pending further proceedings in the case.

The charges remain allegations and have not been proved in court. The accused are presumed innocent unless convicted by a competent court.
