Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder of a two-year-old girl whose body was recovered from a maize plantation in Kyetume, Gayaza, following a ransom demand of Shs10 million.
The deceased, identified as Kyomuhando Dartiva Rosaries, had been reported missing by her mother, Atukwatse Lillian, on October 27, 2026, according to a police statement issued on Thursday.
Kampala Metropolitan Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the child disappeared while playing with other children in the neighbourhood.
On the morning of October 28, a ransom note demanding Shs10 million was discovered at her mother’s gate, prompting further investigations into the child’s disappearance.
Police said one of the suspects, Muhumuza Joshua, a pedicurist, reportedly led investigators to a maize plantation in Kyetume, Gayaza, where the child’s body was recovered.
Muhumuza also reportedly identified the second suspect, Amusuguti Florence, who has since been arrested.
“A mobile phone was recovered from Muhumuza, and investigations are underway into its alleged use in making ransom demands,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police said preliminary findings indicate that Muhumuza knew the child and her mother and had previously worked for the mother as a pedicurist.
His residence was separated from the family’s home by a perimeter wall, according to the statement.
The child’s body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Police said investigations were ongoing and the suspects would be processed in accordance with the law.
The arrests follow a reported ransom demand made after the child’s disappearance, although police have not provided further details about the alleged roles of the two suspects.
Police extended condolences to the bereaved family as investigations continue.
