Tanzanian singer Faustina Charles Mfinanga, popularly known as Nandy, has been fined TSh3 million by the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) over an outfit she wore while performing at the Miss Universe Tanzania 2026 final in Dar es Salaam.
BASATA said the outfit was indecent and violated standards concerning the dignity of viewers. The final was held at Haddypro Hall in Dar es Salaam.
According to the council’s decision, Nandy admitted the violation, removed the performance video from her social media platforms and paid the fine.
BASATA subsequently allowed her to continue with her artistic activities, although under the council’s supervision.
The incident also resulted in a TSh3 million fine against Millen Privé & Co. Lifestyle Limited, the organiser of Miss Universe Tanzania. BASATA held the organiser responsible for allowing the alleged violation during the event and issued it with a warning.
The sanctions followed a September 22 summons issued by BASATA to Nandy, Bongo Flava singer Harmonize, music director Kennedy David Sanga, popularly known as Director Kenny, and model Millen Magesse, who is the country director for Miss Universe Tanzania and Miss Supranational Tanzania.
Nandy’s case formed part of a wider enforcement action by BASATA against artists and other players in Tanzania’s creative industry.
Harmonize was separately fined TSh5 million over the distribution of his Kudos music video, while Director Kenny received the same fine over his role in directing the video. Both were ordered to remove the video from their social media platforms and suspend artistic activities until they comply with the council’s directives.
BASATA said the sanctions are intended to ensure that artists, event organisers and other stakeholders comply with Tanzania’s laws, regulations, guidelines and ethical standards governing artistic activities.
