YUMBE — Police in Yumbe District have opened an investigation after two people were shot and injured during a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement operation in Kulikulinga Town Council.
The incident occurred at about 9am on Thursday, September 24, 2026, when URA officers, accompanied by Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel, were conducting an operation targeting unregistered motorcycles and suspected smugglers.
According to preliminary police information, the enforcement team encountered a group of youths who allegedly attempted to stop the operation by throwing stones and other objects at the officers.
The confrontation reportedly escalated when UPDF personnel accompanying the URA team fired shots to disperse the crowd.
A 21-year-old and a 16-year-old sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital in Kuru for treatment. Police have not released their identities.
Collins Asea, the Madi Sub-region police spokesperson, said the incident was registered at Yumbe Police Station as a case of unlawful wounding under reference Yumbe GEF 019/2026.
The two injured people have recorded statements with police, while an eyewitness has also been interviewed. Police issued the victims PF3 forms to facilitate medical examination and documentation of their injuries.
Investigators are seeking to establish the sequence of events leading to the shooting, including the circumstances under which firearms were used.
It is not yet clear whether the two victims were among those allegedly resisting the URA operation or were caught up in the confrontation.
Police said inquiries are ongoing, with further statements expected as investigators establish the circumstances of the shooting and determine whether any individuals should face charges.
No arrests or charges have been announced in connection with the shooting.
