The Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court has convicted a man accused of fraudulently obtaining Shs300 million in a land transaction and ordered him to pay the money to the complainant as compensation.
The Anti-Corruption Unit of State House identified the convict as Mwesigye Amos, who was accused of obtaining Shs300 million from Steven Kagyenyi by false pretences.
According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, Mwesigye was also ordered to pay a fine following his conviction on Wednesday.
The case arose from a complaint investigated by the Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Mwesigye was arrested and charged in 2023 following allegations that he had fraudulently claimed ownership of 120 acres of titled land in Gomba District.
The Anti-Corruption Unit said that in 2020, Mwesigye allegedly worked with some family members of the late Nasanairi Kinalwa to falsely claim that they had purchased the land despite not being its rightful owners.
He allegedly went on to sell part of the land to other individuals, an action prosecutors said was intended to undermine the interests of the registered owner.
The court subsequently convicted Mwesigye and ordered him to compensate Kagyenyi with Shs300 million, the amount he had allegedly obtained through the false representation.
The Anti-Corruption Unit said the conviction followed its continued efforts, together with CID and ODPP, to investigate and prosecute cases involving fraud and land-related corruption.
