At least 21 Senior Six students of Mahyoro Secondary School in Kitagwenda District have been arrested for allegedly assaulting their headteacher, Denis Baguma, during a protest over inadequate revision support ahead of their Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

The students reportedly turned against Baguma, accusing him of failing to secure facilitators to help them prepare for their final examinations.

Videos of the incident have circulated on social media, drawing attention to tensions at the school as candidates prepare for their national examinations.

Police from stations in Kitagwenda reportedly intervened to restore order following the incident.

Local leaders, including Joshua Atumanya, have since held emergency meetings to address the matter, while the school board is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

The students’ reported concerns about examination preparation have brought into focus the support available to candidates in the final weeks of their secondary education. However, the allegations of assault have raised concerns about the use of violence to resolve grievances within schools.

Further details about the students’ identities, the nature of the alleged assault, and whether any formal charges have been filed were not immediately available.

The students remain suspects in the alleged incident, and the allegations against them have not been established in court.
