Gashumba ranks Chameleone above Diamond Platnumz

Ugandan businessman and political commentator Frank Gashumba has described singer Jose Chameleone as more musically talented than Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz, arguing that the Ugandan musician remains East Africa’s finest despite their contrasting levels of commercial success.

Speaking on Radio 4, Gashumba said Chameleone’s musical ability, catalogue and contribution to the region’s entertainment industry place him ahead of other artistes, including Diamond.

Gashumba maintained that Diamond also recognises Chameleone’s musical stature and holds him in high regard.

His latest remarks reinforce his long-standing admiration for the Ugandan singer, whom he has repeatedly described as one of the most gifted musicians in East Africa.

However, Gashumba has previously argued that poor management and a lack of professional discipline have prevented Chameleone from fully exploiting his talent and achieving greater commercial success.

He contrasted Chameleone’s career with Diamond’s, saying the Tanzanian singer has benefited from organised management, strategic branding and a professional team that has helped expand his reach beyond his home country.

According to Gashumba, the difference in their commercial achievements should not be mistaken for a difference in musical ability.

Diamond has previously expressed admiration for Chameleone, describing him as an East African music legend. He has also paid tribute to the Ugandan singer’s catalogue through performances of some of his songs, including Valu Valu.

The Tanzanian star has also spoken about his interest in collaborating with Chameleone, although a joint project between the two musicians has remained a subject of discussion in entertainment circles.

The two artistes represent different trajectories in East African music.

Chameleone, whose career spans decades, built a reputation through a catalogue that helped shape Uganda’s contemporary music industry and earned him a following across the region.

Diamond, meanwhile, has established himself as one of Africa’s most commercially successful musicians through international collaborations, streaming platforms, global performances and strategic music management.

Gashumba’s assessment raises an enduring debate in the entertainment industry: whether musical greatness should be measured by artistic ability and legacy or by commercial success, international visibility and influence.

While Diamond has built a bigger commercial profile internationally, Gashumba believes Chameleone remains ahead when it comes to musical talent.
