FORT PORTAL — Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has been enthroned as the new Omukama of Tooro Kingdom after completing a series of traditional rituals leading to his entry into Karuziika Palace.
The enthronement marks the end of the mourning period following the death of his father, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, in August, and the beginning of a new reign in the kingdom.
Before entering the palace, the Omukama-designate participated in traditional ceremonies that culminated in a symbolic demonstration of his authority and responsibility to defend the kingdom.
He entered through the Mugabante Gate and speared a bull, a ritual presented as a demonstration of cultural continuity and the incoming monarch’s responsibility to protect his subjects.
The ceremonies followed an overnight procession from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace, during which the Omukama-designate walked about four kilometres accompanied by men and crowds of cheering subjects.
The procession formed part of a series of traditional rites performed on the eve of the coronation.
During the Okujumure Engoma ritual, Edward struck the royal drum nine times, formally marking his assumption of the spiritual and administrative leadership of Tooro Kingdom.
The royal drums were subsequently unveiled, while lion statues at the Fort Portal roundabout and at the entrance to Karuziika Palace were uncovered, signalling the end of the mourning period.
The ceremonies also included a symbolic mock battle along the route to the palace, reflecting the traditional idea of the incoming king demonstrating his strength and readiness to defend the kingdom.
Earlier, at Buhesi Palace in Bunyangabo, Edward underwent the Okweeza ritual, during which he was served milk and coffee beans, known locally as emwani.
The rituals preceded his entry into Karuziika Palace, where he is now formally installed as Tooro’s monarch.
The coronation brings to an end weeks of preparations following the death of Oyo, who died aged 34 on August 27, 2026, after reigning as Omukama for more than two decades.
The transition has also drawn large crowds to Fort Portal, with the city decorated in Tooro colours and residents and visitors gathering for the ceremonies.
The coronation ceremony is being held at Karuziika Palace, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to attend as Chief Guest.
The enthronement also marks a significant moment for the kingdom as it moves from a period of mourning into a new reign under Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
