Chris Brown jailed over London nightclub attack

American R&B singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.

The 37-year-old singer was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, after pleading guilty to affray over the incident at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair.

His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also known as Hoody Baby, received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Both men were also ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

The suspended sentences mean neither man is required to serve the prison term immediately, provided they comply with the court’s conditions and do not commit further offences during the suspension period.

The court heard that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a tequila bottle during the confrontation. Akinlolu then punched the producer, who was also kicked while on the ground.

The attack occurred in a crowded nightclub and was captured on CCTV. Diaw sustained head and knee injuries and received hospital treatment.

Brown pleaded guilty to affray in July 2026. More serious charges, including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon, were dropped as part of the arrangements surrounding the guilty pleas.

Judge cites danger of bottle attack

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described striking someone on the head with a glass bottle as “plainly dangerous”, highlighting the seriousness of the violence and the potential risk to other people in the crowded venue.

The judge also considered Brown’s early guilty plea, compliance with bail conditions and an assessment indicating a low risk of reoffending. The potential impact of immediate imprisonment on the singer’s children was another factor taken into account.

However, the court made clear that Brown’s international fame and commercial success did not entitle him to special treatment.

The case attracted renewed attention in May 2025, when Brown was arrested after returning to the United Kingdom. He was subsequently released on substantial bail as proceedings continued.

The sentencing marks a major development in the case, more than three years after the nightclub incident. Although Brown has avoided immediate imprisonment, the suspended sentence leaves him liable to further consequences if he breaches its terms or commits another offence during the 12-month period.
