Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai set a national record after winning the women’s 10km race at the Berliner Morgenpost Great 10K in Germany on Sunday.

Chemutai clocked 29 minutes, 57 seconds to win the race, breaking the 13-year-old course record by 40 seconds and becoming the first Ugandan woman to run the distance in under 30 minutes, according to the race organisers.

Ethiopia’s Birtukan Molla finished second in 30:50, while Uganda’s Peace Chebet took third place in 31:45. Kenya’s Brenda Kiplagat finished fourth in 31:51, according to results reported by Runner’s World.

Chemutai, the Olympic champion in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase at the Tokyo 2020 Games held in 2021, said she had expected to run a fast time but had not anticipated setting both records.

“I feel really good right now. I knew beforehand that I could run a fast time here today. But I did not expect it to be a course record and a national record for Uganda, which makes me really happy,” she told the race organisers.

The Ugandan said she planned to return to Berlin in 2027 and hoped to run under 29 minutes.

The race attracted about 7,000 runners and followed a route from Charlottenburg Palace towards the Victory Column, through Berlin Zoo and back.

Chemutai’s victory adds a road-running record to a career highlighted by Olympic success in the steeplechase. She won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and silver at the Paris 2024 Games.

Chebet’s third-place finish gave Uganda two athletes on the women’s podium in Berlin.
