MUKONO — Bamutakudde Village in Mukono District has received 96 hoes from the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) to support communal farming.
The development was announced on September 18 by Bamutakudde LC1 Chairperson Solomon Sserwanjja, who said the farming tools would be distributed among farmers and young people participating in the village’s communal farming initiative.
Sserwanjja said the support would strengthen the community’s efforts to improve food security and create economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth.
The distribution will be guided by a framework intended to ensure that the tools reach farmers participating in the communal farming programme and are properly accounted for.
The village leadership said land preparation for the next farming season had already started.
The latest support follows other agricultural initiatives in Bamutakudde since Sserwanjja was elected LC1 chairperson in July.
Sserwanjja, a former journalist, won the LC1 election by one vote, polling 106 votes against 105 for his closest rival. He said after his election that he intended to use his networks to lobby for government support and monitor the implementation of government programmes in the village.
In early September, Bamutakudde also received one tonne of maize seed for farmers after Sserwanjja sought support from Uganda Prisons Commissioner General Johnson Byabashaija. The seed was intended to support food production and household incomes in the village.
The village has also developed a five-year development plan focusing on clean water, household incomes, youth skills development and resource mobilisation.
Among the priorities identified is increasing agricultural and other income-generating activities while connecting residents to existing government programmes, including the Parish Development Model and youth support initiatives.
Mukono District authorities have previously engaged with Bamutakudde residents over challenges including access to water and roads. The district has said it plans to improve the road serving the community and undertake water interventions once its well-drilling equipment becomes operational.
The 96 hoes are expected to be used as farmers begin land preparation, with the village leadership saying the initiative is intended to increase participation in communal farming and improve food production.
