KAMPALA — Kyambogo University has come under scrutiny after Members of Parliament heard that some graduates were awarded certificates for academic programmes they did not study, raising concerns about the institution’s academic records and quality assurance.
The issue emerged during a meeting of Parliament’s Committee on Education and Sports, where legislators questioned university officials over reports that students admitted to pursue Diplomas in Physical Education and Sports instead graduated with certificates for Sports Management.
According to Parliament, the affected students completed the programme they were admitted to, but the qualifications issued at graduation reflected a different course.
Appearing before the committee, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Justus Kwetegyeka acknowledged the anomaly and assured MPs that the university was taking steps to rectify the mistake through its established academic procedures. He said the correction process was already underway.
The committee’s inquiry comes amid growing concern over academic standards and the integrity of qualifications awarded by higher institutions of learning.
The certificate mix-up is not the first time Kyambogo University has faced questions over programme titles. Earlier this year, former students raised concerns over discrepancies in qualifications awarded for sports-related programmes, with the dispute attracting the attention of education authorities and affecting some graduates’ employment prospects.
Members of Parliament said the latest case highlights the need for stronger internal quality assurance systems to ensure students receive qualifications that accurately reflect the courses they studied.
The committee is expected to continue examining the matter as part of its oversight of higher education institutions, while awaiting details on how many students were affected and when corrected certificates will be issued.
Kyambogo University is one of Uganda’s largest public universities, offering programmes in education, engineering, vocational studies, special needs education and other disciplines.
