The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced the death of Private David Onencan, a ranger attached to the Kidepo Valley Conservation Area.
Onencan was killed during an exchange of fire with armed poachers, according to UWA.
In a statement, the wildlife authority said it was mourning the ranger’s death and extended condolences to his family and colleagues.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Pte. David Onencan of Kidepo Valley Conservation Area, who lost his life in an exchange of fire with armed poachers,” UWA said.
The authority also called for comfort and strength for Onencan’s family and colleagues as they mourn his death.
The circumstances surrounding the encounter, including the identities of the armed poachers and whether any arrests were made, were not immediately provided by UWA.
UWA has continued to deploy rangers across protected areas to combat illegal activities, including poaching and wildlife trafficking.
