The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise for 10,200 soldiers, with military leadership emphasizing strict anti-corruption measures and a stronger focus on science and technical qualifications as part of ongoing modernization efforts.
The recruitment drive, expected to begin later this month, will be conducted across all districts and cities under the supervision of district security committees, Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), and local government leaders.
Officials said the exercise is aimed at strengthening Uganda’s defence capacity while building a force equipped to handle increasingly complex and technology-driven security operations.
UPDF prioritises science and technical skills
According to recruitment guidelines issued to district authorities, applicants with science-based academic backgrounds will be given priority consideration.
The UPDF is targeting candidates with qualifications in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, information technology, and engineering disciplines, reflecting a shift toward a more technologically advanced military.
Military officials noted that modern defence operations increasingly rely on cyber-security systems, electronic surveillance, aviation support, communications technology, military engineering, and intelligence analysis.
Security analysts say the move reflects the UPDF’s gradual transition into a more technologically capable regional force.
“The military is increasingly becoming knowledge-driven. Modern armies require personnel who can manage digital systems, surveillance technology and advanced equipment,” a Kampala-based security analyst said.
Uganda has in recent years expanded investment in military aviation, intelligence infrastructure, border surveillance systems, and specialised counter-terrorism units, all of which have increased demand for technically trained personnel.
Recruitment timeline announced
Authorities said applications will be submitted online between June 10 and June 24, 2026.
Shortlisted candidates will be displayed between July 1 and July 14 at district headquarters and through official UPDF communication platforms.
Physical screening, interviews, medical checks, and fitness assessments are scheduled to begin on July 20 at designated recruitment centres nationwide.
District quotas have been allocated to ensure regional balance, while the Kampala Metropolitan Area is expected to attract particularly high numbers of applicants. Municipalities and divisions including Kira, Nansana, Makindye-Ssabagabo, Busiro North, and Busiro South will operate as separate recruitment units to manage congestion.
Army moves to curb corruption in recruitment
The exercise comes amid long-standing concerns over bribery and manipulation in previous recruitment drives.
Authorities acknowledged past incidents in which applicants were reportedly defrauded by brokers and imposters claiming to offer access to UPDF recruitment in exchange for money.
Security agencies have in the past arrested individuals accused of running fake recruitment schemes targeting job-seeking youth.
The UPDF said tighter verification systems and enhanced supervision have now been introduced to eliminate bribery, favoritism, and document forgery.
The Office of the President has directed district security committees and local leaders to closely monitor the exercise and ensure transparency at every stage.
Officials reiterated that recruitment into the UPDF is free of charge and warned applicants against paying any individual promising influence or guaranteed entry.
“Anyone involved in extortion or fraud linked to recruitment will be arrested and prosecuted,” authorities said, urging the public to report suspected cases of corruption immediately.
Salary improvements drive interest
The recruitment exercise is expected to attract strong interest from young Ugandans, driven by high unemployment and improved military remuneration.
Recent government salary enhancements for junior ranks have significantly increased interest in military service.
Under the revised structure, Privates and Corporals are expected to earn upwards of Shs800,000 per month, alongside housing, healthcare, and other benefits.
Officials say the improved pay is intended to boost morale, reduce corruption, and strengthen professionalism within the force.
Regional security commitments continue
The recruitment comes as Uganda continues its involvement in regional peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations, including deployments in Somalia and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
UPDF forces have participated in operations targeting armed groups such as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), alongside regional and international partners.
Military officials urged eligible youth to apply only through official channels and avoid individuals attempting to exploit the process for financial gain, reiterating that recruitment remains strictly merit-based and free of charge.
