KAMPALA, Uganda — The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned the alleged abduction of one of its supporters, identified as Ninye Tabz, in Kampala’s Kamwokya suburb, accusing security operatives of reviving tactics associated with enforced disappearances and illegal detentions.
According to accounts shared by party supporters and eyewitnesses, Ninye Tabz was reportedly picked up on Wednesday by unidentified armed men travelling in an unmarked Toyota Hiace van, commonly referred to by opposition activists as a “drone.”
The alleged incident triggered immediate concern among NUP leaders and supporters, who claimed it reflects a continued crackdown on opposition mobilization and political activism.
In statements shared on social media, party officials demanded that authorities immediately disclose the whereabouts of the missing supporter and ensure that due process is followed if he is facing any criminal charges.
NUP leaders argued that such incidents create fear among opposition supporters, particularly young activists, and undermine constitutional freedoms of association and political participation.
The party further called on security agencies to either release Ninye Tabz unconditionally or produce him before a competent court of law as required under Uganda’s legal framework.
The use of so-called “drone” vans became a major political controversy during and after the 2021 general election period, when numerous opposition supporters reported being seized by armed men in unmarked vehicles before later resurfacing in detention facilities, military courts, or police custody.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over allegations of enforced disappearances, unlawful arrests and prolonged detentions without trial, urging the government to investigate reported abuses and strengthen accountability within security operations.
Government and security agencies have consistently denied involvement in illegal abductions, maintaining that all arrests are conducted in accordance with the law and established procedures.
By Wednesday evening, there had been no official communication from police or other security agencies regarding the reported arrest, detention, or whereabouts of Ninye Tabz.
The latest incident comes amid heightened political activity as parties begin preparations for future electoral contests, with opposition groups warning against what they describe as increasing intimidation of their members and supporters.
