Kampala, Uganda – July 24, 2026 — The Uganda Police Force has announced a nationwide restriction on the movement of vehicles and motorcycles during the National Cleaning Day scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, urging Ugandans to participate in the sanitation exercise aimed at improving public health and preventing disease outbreaks.
In a press statement issued on Friday from Police Headquarters, the force said the cleaning exercise will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. across the country as part of the Government of Uganda’s efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and combat illnesses linked to poor sanitation.
Police called upon citizens, community leaders, traders, institutions, and motorists to fully cooperate and actively participate in the exercise, describing it as a national responsibility that requires collective action.
Under the directive, all vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and vessels will not be permitted to operate on roads or water bodies between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., except in emergency situations. Authorities said traffic movement will be restricted nationwide throughout the three-hour exercise.
Members of the public have been advised to remain within their local communities during the exercise, take part in cleaning activities, and only resume normal travel and business operations after 10:00 a.m.
The police, however, clarified that several categories of road users will be exempted from the movement restrictions. These include emergency service vehicles, such as ambulances responding to medical emergencies, security vehicles on official duty, and cross-border traffic using major international transport corridors.
Patients travelling for scheduled medical treatment have been advised to carry relevant medical documentation to facilitate identification at security checkpoints. Medical personnel are also expected to carry official identification documents while on duty.
Police further urged members of the public to cooperate with security personnel deployed to supervise the exercise and avoid confrontations or unnecessary disputes. Individuals requiring clarification or assistance have been encouraged to seek guidance from the nearest police officer or supervising security personnel.
The National Cleaning Day is part of broader government efforts to strengthen environmental hygiene, improve public health standards, and reduce the spread of diseases associated with poor sanitation. Authorities have repeatedly stressed that community participation is essential to ensuring cleaner neighbourhoods and healthier living conditions across Uganda.
The Uganda Police Force appealed to all Ugandans to comply with the temporary restrictions and contribute to the success of the nationwide cleaning campaign.
