The Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has endorsed Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the position of Speaker of Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.
In a public message issued Friday, Muhoozi praised Oboth-Oboth’s performance in government, describing him as the best-performing minister over the last five years.
“He has been the best Minister in our government for the past 5 years. I want to be the first to endorse him for Speaker of Parliament (2026–2031). God bless Hon. Oboth-Oboth!” Muhoozi said.
The endorsement is likely to intensify political discussions around the leadership of the incoming 12th Parliament, whose term will run from 2026 to 2031.
Oboth-Oboth currently serves as Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, where he has played a prominent role on national security and regional defence matters. In recent months, he has frequently represented government on military cooperation and security-related engagements, raising his political profile within Cabinet and Parliament.
Political analysts say Muhoozi’s backing could influence internal discussions within the ruling National Resistance Movement, particularly as debates over future parliamentary leadership and succession dynamics continue to emerge ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The endorsement also comes amid speculation over who could succeed current Speaker Anita Annet Among should changes occur in the leadership structure of Parliament after the 2026 general elections.
Although Oboth-Oboth has not publicly declared interest in the Speakership, observers say support from influential figures such as Muhoozi could strengthen momentum around a possible bid.
The Speaker of Parliament remains one of the most influential offices in Uganda’s governance system, presiding over legislative business and managing relations between Parliament and the Executive.
Muhoozi’s remarks are expected to trigger further political reactions as conversations over the future leadership of Parliament continue to gather pace.
