Motorists using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway can now pay toll fees using mobile money, in a new system launched by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The service is available at designated lanes 4 and 5 at all three toll plazas — Busega, Kajjansi and Mpala — through a partnership between Kampala-Entebbe Expressway and MTN Mobile Money.
Under the system, motorists select a designated mobile money lane and provide their phone number to the toll attendant. A payment prompt is then sent to the phone. After confirming the details, the motorist enters their Mobile Money PIN and the transaction is completed, allowing the barrier to open.
Ivan Katamba, Road Manager at Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, said the system addresses a long-standing challenge for road users.
“This solves a long-standing pain point for road users and makes toll payments more convenient,” Katamba said.
MTN Mobile Money Chief Product Officer Jemima Kariuki said the service extends mobile money beyond conventional transactions.
She said technology should make everyday activities “better, faster and more convenient,” including how people move through the country.
Eng. Joan Alinda, Project Manager at Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, said the initiative forms part of efforts to improve customer convenience alongside road safety and emergency response.
The Ministry said the mobile money option is expected to support a broader shift toward cashless toll collection.
Allan Ssempebwa Kyobe, a Senior Communications Officer at the Ministry, said a second phase will further expand cashless payment options and make toll collection more seamless.
