Police in Mbarara City are investigating the killing of a man and his wife in Kafunjo Cell, Nyarubanga Ward, Mbarara City North Division.
The deceased have been identified as Herbert Tulyatunga and Jane Nakyanzi, residents of the area.
According to a report by The Ankole Times citing police, the incident occurred at about 10pm on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Police said Nakyanzi was attacked and hacked to death inside her home. Her husband, Herbert, reportedly returned home after watching football and found her dead before the attackers turned on him.
He was reportedly rescued by children of his second wife and rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police recovered blood-stained clothing as well as picks and axes believed to have been abandoned at the scene. The bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.
Police are reportedly pursuing a suspect identified as Owen and other people believed to be connected to the murders. The motive has not yet been established.
Reports circulating on social media have alleged that Herbert’s first wife and her two sons were arrested in connection with the killings. However, the latest police-linked report available does not confirm those arrests or identify the first wife and her sons as suspects.
The investigation remains ongoing.
