Police has arrested a medical officer attached to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital on allegations of stealing Oxygen gas cylinders of the same Hospital.
The 40 oxygen cylinders were installed in his private facility, Life General Clinic and Laboratory in Nkoma ward, Industrial City Division.
Police have since recovered one of the cylinders from the clinic and also arrested one of the staff at the clinic.
“Some have been recovered from his private clinic upon search,” said CID spokesperson Charles Twiine, without naming the suspect.
According to reports, 64 children died in Mbale Region Referral Hospital Acute Ward in 68 days.
Dr. Emmanuel Tugaineyo, the Director Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, is quoted saying the hospital is struggling with blood shortage.
He said five children died on May 30th, 2021 because they couldn’t find blood, which matches their blood group.
Relatedly, a total of 10 patients died of Covid-19 at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital over the past one month due to shortage of oxygen.
The referral hospital, which is the treatment centre for all Covid-19 patients in Teso Sub-region, has over the last two weeks reported a surge in cases, especially those in critical condition.
But Dr Michael Mwanga, the hospital director, told Daily Monitor on Monday that the surge in Covid-19 cases has led to an acute shortage of oxygen, which is needed for management of patients under intensive care treatment.
Dr Mwanga added that the hospital’s oxygen plant can only generate 30 cylinders per day, which is not enough.
As a result of oxygen inadequacies, some patients in the intensive care unit had to be evacuated to Kampala.
