Thirteen people were killed on Tuesday in an attack by gunmen suspected to be rebels of the Ugandan ADF (Allied Democratic Forces). Local sources say that several others have been abducted and property stolen.
The attack occured in the locality of Kilya near the village of Kisima in the territory of Beni (North Kivu province, eastern DRC).
According to Willy Malikidogo, president of the Kilya center, the chief of the attacked village and his wife are among the victims. “I confirm that 13 civilians were killed. The incident occurred exactly at Kisima 1er and Mabule, between Halungupa and Mutwanga, on the Beni-Kasindi road ,” he said.
Local civil society also confirmed the death of the couple.
Information from various sources says that the attackers were the Ugandan rebel group ADF.
“It was the ADF who raided the village of Kisima. They used knives and executed people here. It was terrible and we fled without taking anything with us. Several people were abducted by the attackers; we don’t know if they are still alive,” a group of residents who fled said.
The day before, another person was killed by the assailants in the same village, according to Meleki Mulala of the new civil society in the Ruwenzori sector.
More seven people killed
The two attacks took place in Ruwenzori in the territory of Beni in the province of North Kivu (eastern DRC).
The first targeted a freight vehicle last night while the other took place in the morning of Friday.
Perpetrators of the double attack are armed men assimilated to the Ugandan rebels ADF (Allied Democratic Forces).
The provisional toll shows seven people killed, others missing, the vehicle and five houses burned.
The first attack on Thursday evening claimed the lives of a driver and his conductor. They were ambushed by gunmen.
“Their vehicle was trapped on the national road number 4 (RN4) between Beni and Kasindi between the villages of Kisima and Bulongo. The attackers killed the driver and his conductor before burning the vehicle which caught fire and all the luggage. Other passengers who were on board were abducted”, according to the local civil society.
The second attack occurred in the morning of Friday. It targeted the village of Mighende (still in the Rwenzori sector).
Five people died in houses burned down by attackers.
Earlier this week, another attack was perpetrated on the village of Kisima (same territory of Beni).
The territorial administration indicates that around 20 people were killed in this attack.
In only one month, the local civil society claims to have counted 40 civilians dead in gunmen’s attacks.
