The 11th Parliament of Uganda commences today, Monday 17 May 2021, with the swearing-in of new Members.
This is the 11th Parliament of Uganda since the country attained independence in October 1962.
Today, about 131 Members-elect took the oath of allegiance and the oath of Member of Parliament.
The oath of allegiance and the oath of Member of Parliament are provided for in Article 81 (4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda.
Article 81(4) of the Constitution says: Every person elected to Parliament shall take and subscribe the oath of allegiance and the oath of member of Parliament specified in the Fourth Schedule to this Constitution.
The Oath of Member of Parliament reads:
I, [NAME]_________________, swear in the name of the Almighty God/solemnly affirm that I will give faithful service to this Parliament and support and uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda as by law established. [So help me God.]
