Drama ensued at All Saints Cathedral in Kampala as relatives of deceased lawyer Bob Kasango fought over his body.
The first group led by Kasango’s mother Rose Kabise wanted his remains to be taken to his ancestral home in Tororo District in eastern Uganda.
The Tuesday afternoon scuffle happened moments after the funeral service when relatives failed to agree on where to bury him.
The second group led by his wife Nice Bitarabeho Kasango and eldest son Samora Paul Kasango, wanted the body to be taken to For Portal in western Uganda where Kasango’s wife hails from.
The Tororo group saying they were being sidelined by Kasango’s in-laws, intercepted the body as it was being taken to the hearse by funeral service providers, loaded it on a waiting truck and sped off with it.
The Fort Portal group started making frantic calls, seemingly to security operatives, asking them to intercept the truck en route to Tororo.
Kasango died at the close of last week while being transferred to Mulago hospital.
He has been in jail over Shs15.4bn fraud, the money in question had been meant to pay pension and gratuity of more than 6,340 pensioners between 2011 and 2012.
