Bunyole West Member of Parliament Hon James Waluswaka has proposed that the runner up in the presidential elections should automatically become deputy president.
He made the suggestion Thursday as plenary debated the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
“Madam Speaker, I propose that first runner up in the presidential elections should automatically become deputy president,” stated Waluswaka before pushing for the restoration of term limits.
“Madam Speaker, due to public demand, I support the proposal to restore Presidential term Limits; I propose that the 10 slots for the Army representatives be divided among the security agencies to the police and the prison services.”
Out of 65 MPs who presented their views on the Bill, there is a general consensus among the MPs on: Reinstatement of Presidential term limits and Establishment of panel of Speaker’s.
The other clauses continue to attract divagent views.
Speaker Rebecca Kadaga says that 65 MPs have so far presented their views on the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
She notes the the bill second reading will be on notice.
If Waluswaka’s proposal is adopted, that would make National Unity Platform leader Bobi Wine the deputy president of Uganda.
