Businessman remanded over Shs13bn fake gold scam

KAMPALA — The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded businessman Muhammad Ali on charges of forgery and uttering false documents in connection with an alleged fake gold scam worth approximately UGX 13 billion.

According to Uganda’s State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), Ali was on Friday re-arraigned before the court following a joint investigation involving the Anti-Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The court remanded him until July 31, 2026.

Authorities allege that Ali used forged documents to secure bail while he was facing prosecution in the principal case involving an alleged USD 3.5 million (approximately UGX 13 billion) fake gold scam targeting investors from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit said the latest charges relate specifically to the alleged forgery and use of false documents in the bail process.

Investigators also revealed that they have developed new leads pointing to other individuals believed to have participated in the alleged fraud.

According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, the additional suspects remain at large, with efforts underway to locate and arrest them. The agency said all suspects will be arraigned before court once apprehended.

The alleged gold scam is one of several high-profile cases involving fraudulent gold transactions that have attracted the attention of Ugandan authorities in recent years as the government seeks to strengthen oversight of the country’s mineral trade.

Under Ugandan law, Muhammad Ali remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of law.
