Opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s family is mourning the death of his first grandchild, according to a statement by his aide Ronald Muhinda.
Muhinda announced the death in a Facebook post, saying the child, born to Besigye’s first son Adam Ampa, died at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
“Sadly, Adam Ampa, the first son of our leader Kizza Besigye, has lost his child and also Besigye’s only grandchild at Mulago Hospital,” Muhinda wrote.
He added: “May God strengthen the family the best way he can.”
No further details about the child’s age, sex, cause of death or circumstances surrounding the death were immediately provided.
The death comes as Besigye, a longtime opposition politician and four-time presidential candidate, remains in detention. He was taken to Mulago in July after collapsing during proceedings in his treason case and was later discharged and returned to Luzira Prison Hospital, according to Uganda Prisons Service.
Besigye and his co-accused face treason charges, which they deny.
The family has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the death.
