KAMPALA — Police have arrested 93 people, including four women, in an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected criminal gangs around Busega, Kyengera and parts of the Northern Bypass.

The operation was conducted on Wednesday between 7pm and 11pm to curb suspected criminal activities during the evening traffic rush, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said.

Kawala said the operation covered the Northern Bypass, Busega Fish Market and cinema halls in the surrounding areas.

Police also searched a swamp beyond the Mityana Road Flyover towards Bulenga, as well as other locations identified within Kigwanya Zone in Kampala District.

According to Kawala, the suspects were allegedly using some of the areas as hideouts and taking advantage of traffic congestion to target members of the public.

“A total of 93 suspects, including four females, were arrested during the operation,” she said.

Police said a preliminary search of the suspects led to the recovery of suspected opium, suspected stolen mobile phones and two knives, among other items.

Kawala said the suspects and recovered exhibits had been taken up for further processing and investigation in accordance with the law.

Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects or the specific offences each is suspected of committing.
