The Great Lakes Regional University Kanungu has been closed on the directives of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) due to failure to resolve the disputes among its directors.
This is according to a November 23, 2021 letter by Mary Okwakol, NCHE Executive Director.
The letter is copied to the Minister of Education and Sports, the Minister of State for Higher Education, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education, Chairperson NCHE, RDC Kanungu, DPC Kanungu, Dr Hamlet Mbabazi Kabushenga and Honest Wikins Natukwasa.
The letter directed the Vice-Chancellor of the Great Lakes Regional University Dorothy Kabugo to close for a month to enable thorough investigations into the ownership wrangles.
This was reached in a meeting that took place on Monday which established non-compliance citing contestation of the ownership, poor management and governance and other recurrence issues of non-governance of the University.
The letter ordered the institution to shut its gates by Wednesday and police has since deployed to effect the directive.
According to the directive, the management, staff, and students must vacate the University premises by 12 noon today and should only return when NCHE reaches a decision.
