Opposition Forum for Democratic Change has welcomed the much delayed full re-opening of the country (economy).

“Again we demand for a comprehensive plan. By this time, government should have completed an audit of businesses that have been affected by the pandemic and the lockdowns. Once verified, these businesses must be helped. It is not enough to direct them to the Uganda Development Bank,” said FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda on Monday.

He said these businesses can be helped by tax measures and easing of other statutory requirements such as payment of NSSF.

These requirements must be relaxed to allow these businesses to re-start.

“The Minister responsible for Finance Mr. Matia Kasaija must be woken up from the slumber he seems to be enjoying.”

Security Situation

He demanded for a transparent and honest investigation into the throwing of bombs around the country and other violent murders.

“We need an external body because in the past some of our law enforcement agencies have been involved in such criminality.”

Nganda said Police and UPDF lead investigations may not give the country accurate report once some of their officers are involved.

“But most important, the country has a duty to audit the functioning of its security agencies. Was there laxity. Are our agencies well facilitated and prepared.”

“And of course we caution Mr. Museveni not to use the bombs to cramp down on his opponents.”

He said they believe Makindye West MP Hon. Allan Ssewanyana and Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya are victims of their political beliefs.

“They are not in prison because of murder and terrorism but because Museveni must find someone to blame. If it is not Rwanda, it is the opposition and its backers from outside the country. And Museveni makes these pronouncements even before investigations are done.”
