The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon Mathias Mpuuga has joined the country in mourning the passing of Hon Florence Alice Lubega, the first female Ugandan to join Parliament.

As a Member of the Legislative Council (LEGCO) in the pre-independent Uganda and MP for Ssingo North West (present day Mityana district) at Uganda’s Independence, Hon Lubega laid the foundation for women in leadership.

Agreeing to serve the country as Deputy Minister for Community Development and Labour during the times of Dr Apollo Milton Obote and Idi Amin further inspired more women to participate in the country’s politics.

“We recognise her for being part of the investiture efforts of the women movement, and a mirror of our past political history that exiled many regime opponents,” Mpuuga said.

“Our sympathies go to her family, friends and the women movement in the country for losing a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and mentor. May the God Lord rest her soul in eternal peace.”
