Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO) staff are finally out of prison following their arrest last week.

“AFIEGO thanks all those who spoke up for justice,” the NGO said on Monday after six staff who were arrested on Friday October 22 were released.

A made-up holding charge of failure to produce a registration document was preferred against the staff.

AFIEGO is registered and no entity asked for the registration document before the arrest.

Staff are expected to report back to police this Friday (October 29).

“Despite the harassment, we remain strong & will continue to defend the environment & communities’ rights. Thanks everyone for pushing for freedom,” said the NGO.

Civil Society issued a statement to condemn in the strongest terms the arbitrary and undue arrest of the staff of Afiego.

The CSO said it is committed to defending the civic space and call upon govt to uphold constitutionalism and rule of law .
