The first live action on ESPN arrives on the evening of Friday 24 September, with an EFL Championship clash between West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers (20:55 LIVE on ESPN), and the English footy action continues on the afternoon of Saturday 25 September with Reading hosting Middlesbrough (13:25 LIVE on ESPN).

West Brom boss Valerian Ismael has called on his team to be more efficient in front of goal if they are to put themselves in a strong position to earn promotion back to the Premier League: “That is something we have to learn from,” said the Baggies’ boss. “When we get ourselves ahead, we have to stay on the front foot. We have to take the right decisions and the right direction. We have to be ruthless.”

The focus then switches to the Eredivisie, with a trio of matches from the afternoon into the evening: Ajax v Groningen, Willem II v PSV and Feyenoord v NEC (16:20, 18:25 and 20:50 respectively LIVE on ESPN).

The early afternoon of Sunday 26 September sees St Mirren host Aberdeen for a Scottish Premiership clash (12:55 LIVE on ESPN), before the evening features a Major League Baseball clash between arch rivals Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees (18:00 LIVE on ESPN).

Red Sox manager Alex Cora wants to see Boston finding consistency and playing to their strengths as the season progresses: “It’s time that we started showing what we are about as a team and an organization. The pressure is on but we welcome the challenge.”

ESPN 2 opens its live action for the week with a Regular Season clash from the National Football League on the morning of Friday 24 September, as the Houston Texans face the Carolina Panthers (02:20 LIVE on ESPN 2).

Carolina coach Matt Rhule recently sang the praises of quarterback Sam Darnold for his strong start to the season: “He hung in the pocket. We weren’t great up front, but he hung in there and moved around, found guys down the field, made key third-down throws, protected the football. It’s all we can ask of a young guy like that.”

The morning of Saturday 25 September features a Major League Baseball clash between Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees (01:00 LIVE on ESPN 2), before the afternoon has an EFL Championship match between Bournemouth and Luton Town (15:55 LIVE on ESPN 2).

Sunday 26 September switches focus to the Eredivisie, as Sparta Rotterdam take on Cambuur in an early afternoon clash (12:10 LIVE on ESPN 2), before the NFL sees us into the early part of the working week, with the San Francisco 49ers v Green Bay Packers on the morning of Monday 27 September (02:20 LIVE on ESPN 2), and the Dallas Cowboys v Philadelphia Eagles on the morning of Tuesday 28 September (02:15 LIVE on ESPN 2).

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy says he is not worried about mounting injuries, pointing out that a huge roster will help Dallas compete this NFL season: “Guys miss games and I think if you look at the way we went about our roster development, try to keep as many players as possible and this is why. It’s going to take 75-plus players to be successful. This is part of that process.”
