For non-stop animation, such as the original Mickey Mouse cartoons, to innovative mixed media movies, like Avatar and glittering spectacles like Coco, animation has entertained us for decades.

This week there’s no better way to celebrate the skills of hard-working animators across the world than by appreciating the best examples of their creative efforts. And with International Animation Day being celebrated on 28 October, there’s no better time to do it!

As the leading entertainment providers in Africa, DStv and GOtv will help you do just that.

Check out this list of movies and shows that showcase some of the best animation shows on DStv and GOtv.

1)  Bean: The Animated Series

The animated version of Mr Bean is adapted from the beloved 1990–95 British sitcom starring Rowan Atkinson as the bumbling, accident-prone Mr Bean. The animated version focuses on the further misadventures of this endearing character and his beloved teddy bear, Teddy.

Although Mr Bean rarely speaks, he manages to create bizarre circumstances out of almost every ordinary event or a chore.

Other characters in the show include the mean-spirited Mrs Wicket and her nasty cat, as well as his ever-patient girlfriend, Irma Gobb, with occasional appearances by an animated version of Her Majesty the Queen.

Check out the bizarre antics of Mr Bean every day at 19:30 CAT on Boomerang, DStv Channel 302.

2)  Muppet Babies

Created by Jim Henson in 1955, the Muppets originally hit the big screen in 1969, and they’ve been enchanting young audiences ever since. This ensemble of puppet characters was reborn in juvenile animated form in 1984 and then reinvented in 2018 when the series started its run on Disney Junior and the Disney Channel.

The animated show is aimed at audiences between the ages of three – eight and encourages younger viewers to use their imaginations. The main characters are younger versions of the original muppets: Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzi Bear, Gonzo, and Animal, with a few new characters, such as Summer Penguin, added over the years.

Get your dose of nostalgic cuteness on Saturday, 31 October on Disney Junior, DStv Channel 309 or GOtv Channel 60 (353 Uganda & 151 Ghana)

3)  The Simpsons

The Simpsons was one of the first animated series aimed at young adults, created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1987. Originally, the show consisted of a number of shorts featured on The Tracey Ullman Show.

Due to popular demand, it was adapted into a full-length animated sitcom in 1987, and it’s been parodying common themes in the American life, television, and humanity in general ever since.

The entertaining family at the centre of the action (the Simpsons) consists of a husband, Homer, his wife, Marge, and their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

Tune in for some tongue-in-cheek, adults-only humour every weekday at 16:45 CAT on FOX, DStv Channel 125 or GOtv Channel 19 (319 Uganda & 191 Ghana)

4)  Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!

Scooby-Doo started life as an animated series called Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! way back in 1969, and has since been adapted into a full-length movie as well as numerous spin-offs and follow-up series.

The main character is an ever lovable talking Great Dane, with an insatiable appetite for Scooby Snacks. He’s joined by his teenage owner, Norville ‘Shaggy’ Rogers, and friends, Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, and Velma Dinkley.

Together they form a ghost-hunting gang that always gets to the bottom of every mystery (with some mishaps along the way).

Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! comes to you every morning at 03:00 CAT on Boomerang, DStv Channel 302.
