‘Giant Killers’ Bugamba FC eject Onduparaka, aim for greatness

The battle between Bugamba FC and Onduparaka FC

Bugamba FC was among several teams that anxiously waited for the results of the draw for the round of 32 in the Stanbic Uganda cup at FUFA House on Monday morning.

The Western region league outfit, was  among the few upcountry teams that pulled off shocks in the elimination round of 64 a couple of weeks ago, when they stunned top flight side Onduparaka FC with a 1-0 home win at Kabatangare grounds in Bugamba village in the newly created Rwampara district.

With this result over Onduparaka FC, they have deservedly been nicknamed ‘Giant Killers’ by their fans.

Surprisingly, Bugamba FC lies 6th in the 7 team league on the table of Western regional league sub-group of Kigezi, but that did not deter them from putting up a spirited show against fancied Onduparaka FC.

Team coach Salim Twaha seemed a relaxed man before the draws on Monday.

‘We are a small and poor team. We have nothing to show but determination. We shall meet any side whether KCCA FC or SC Villa, but when they give us a home draw, we shall pull yet another surprise because we have never lost at home’ said Salim.

Bugamba FC will now have to travel several miles for a trip to North East to play Light SS in Soroti.

Bugamba were joined by other lowly sides like Kajansi FC that eliminated favorites and current Star Times Uganda Premier League table leaders Vipers SC, whose elimination culminated into immediate sacking of head coach Edward Golora.

Kajansi United will have to face another strong team- Sc Villa in the round of 32.

Bugamba’s home ground Kabatangare, is 51km away from the Ankole’s traditional stadium Kakyeka and Mbarara City centre, along Mbarara Kabale road, with a natural pavilion created by a hill that overlooks the green grounds that provides the beautiful scenery.

The squad of minors, with a secondary school teacher

Bugamba FC does not have a big name players at least in the entire region of Ankole and Western region as a whole.

Instead the players are a collection of able bodied boys and men, majorly former students of Bugamba SS, including a teacher of English/Literature at the same school Mr. Martin Atwine, who plays in the midfield.

The rest were brought into the team from other villages like Masheruka in Sheema and Mbarara apart from their central defender Paul Opio, who is one of the two players outside Ankole, him with Ronald Ojega.

Bugamba’s thin Squad

The club relies on handouts from well-wishers, to travel for matches in the regional league and whenever nothing is given out, they don’t honor their away matches, and they have been docked three points and three goals for not honoring two previous games in the league.

Due to financial constraints, the club has only 18 players of whom, 10 are based in Bugamba with the rest coming from Mbarara, thereby making their trainings sometimes not fully attended because of travel expenses to some players.
