President Museveni has directed government officials to stop taxing people with smaller businesses.
“Stop taxing on gonja, muchomo and the like,” the president reiterated Friday while addressing NRM National Executive Committee [NEC] meeting at State House, Entebbe.
“Please leave poor people. Muve ku banakku. I don’t want to see an NRM person taxing gonja.”
Museveni’s remarks come at a time the hashtag #OmwavuWakuffa [a poor person will definitely die] is still trending on Twitter as Ugandans decry inequalities.
He added: “You are going to bring bad luck on yourself. When you take something from a poor person, it will bring you bad luck”-
Museveni clarified that Ugandans are not difficult to tax hence officials should stop interfering with businesses.
“Ugandans are not difficult people to tax. Encourage them to get some businesses and money. As soon as they make money, they are always busy in the bar.”
He added: “You don’t have to put roadblocks. Tax beer. Taxes on beer are voluntary. How are we going to transform society!”
He went on: “The NRM gave you two options. One of them is free education (UPE). But our people have not implemented this very well. The teachers and some of the parents sit in PTA and decide to charge money.”
He wondered if those people afford (fees charges) and clarified that he totally against the practice of reintroducing charges on free education in government schools.
“I know some of those teachers are looking for money here and there but that’s a very big mistake.”
