Faded and forgotten singer Gerard Muwonge aka Clever J is now making bricks to eke a living, according to the latest gossip.
Clever J hit the limelight in 2007 with his hit song “Manzi Wanani”.
He promised to give the big three [Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine] then, a run for their money.
He followed Manzi Wanani with Fanya Kazi and Ensi Yaleeta, among others, in a voice similar to Leone Island singing doctor Chameleone’s.
Within three years, his voice slowly went silent and the singer himself disappeared mysteriously from the music scene.
NBS TV reported that the singer tried life in South Sudan but things didn’t work out.
He then resurfaced during Eddy Kenzo’s September 2016 concert only to disappear as fast as he had come.
Cameras only recently caught him making bricks in Buloba, on the outskirts of Kampala.
He told NBS that he is now a born again and wasn’t bewitched as rumoured.
Clever J blamed his ruin on a music industry that only sings about fun that educative message.
“For example, someone singing parte after parte, beer after beer, cupa ku cupa…how will our young people be educated?” he mocked.
A bricklayer, Clever J says he has managed to raise funds to complete his studio.
“I will be able to start on my music again,” he promised, vowing not to take part in politics like other musicians are doing.
On Christmas Day, Clever J performed in Namalwa and Ntwetwe but was allegedly never paid.
