Police is holding a young man in Kayunga district who disguised as a woman and walked down the aisle with an Imam, reports Daily Monitor.
Richard Tumushabe, 27, disguised as a beautiful Muslim girl, Swabullah Nabukeera, before exchanging marriage vows a fortnight ago with Mohammed Mutumba, a resident of Kyampisi Village in Kayunga Sub-County, Kayunga District.
Mutumba, an Imam of Kyampisi mosque, found his bride-to-be at Kyampisi mosque where he had gone for prayers.
“I was looking for a woman to marry and when I landed on a beautiful girl wearing a hijab, I asked her for love and she accepted. We fell in love,” he told Daily Monitor.
“She told me we could not have sex until I take dowry to her parents and also exchange marriage vows.”
In a week, Mutumba visited Nabukeera’s aunt, Nuuru Nabukeera, a resident of Kituula Village in Seeta-Namuganga Sub-county.
The alleged aunt was paid dowry including two goats, two bags of sugar, three busuutis, a carton of salt and a Koran.
As agreed, Nabukeera and Mutumba did not sex before Nikah (legal marriage contract between man and woman).
Even after the marriage, the “bride” claimed she was in her menstruation periods for two weeks. Mutumba still waited patiently.
The newlywed bride then left Mutumba’s rented two-roomed house, jumped over the wall and stole the neighbour’s television set and clothes.
The neighbour reported the case at Kayunga Police Station. Nabukeera was arrested by detectives.
Kayunga District criminal investigations officer, Isaac Mugera, told Daily Monitor that when Nabukeera reached the station, “she” was wearing a hijab and sandals.
Before taking “her” to the cells, a female police officer searched the suspect thoroughly only to find the bra stacked with clothes instead of breasts.
The officer decided to check downstairs and to her shock, Nabukeera had male genitals.
Mutumba too was called to see the private parts of his ‘wife’ who he shockingly discovered was a thief.
On interrogation, Nabukeera confessed “her/his” real name was Richard Tumushabe, 27.
He admitted duping Mutumba that he is a woman in a bid to get his money.
Police charged him with impersonation, theft and obtaining goods by false pretence.
On arrest, Nuuru Nabukeera told police that she did not know that her ‘niece’ was male as she got to know him when he was already an adult.
“The first day he came to me he was wearing a hijab. I even slept with him in my bedroom.”
The case file has been sent to the Resident State Attorney for perusal and we are waiting for legal advice before we take him to court.
