Police has arrested Kasangati town Mayor Tony Ssempebwa and People Power coordinators after blocking a consultative meeting by Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Police Monday morning deployed at Our Lady Of Good Counsel Gayaza, Catholic Parish and blocked the first ever presidential consultation ahead of 2021 general elections.
Officers ordered the tents and music service providers to leave the venue, saying Bobi Wine was only supposed to hold the meeting in a close space.
Police defends its action
Police fired teargas and live bullets to disperse People Power supporters saying the venue was “too small” to accommodate over 2,000 people.
Police Spokesman Fred Enanga insisted such meetings recommends closed premises like hotels, saying they have already okayed Bobi Wine’s planned meeting at Grand Pacific Hotel in Lira on Wednesday.
Bobi Wine (Kyaddondo East), Latif Sebagala (Kawempe North) and Mr Asuman Basalirwa (Bugiri Municipalityare) were arrested and detained at Kasangati police station.
According to his social media handler, Bobi Wine was later driven out of Kasangati and rushed to Naggalama police station in Mukono district.
About 13 people including boda boda riders were also arrested.
