Kenya VP Ruto at Makerere to unveil institute

Kenya Deputy President William Ruto is in Uganda for the launch of an institute at Makerere University.

Ruto arrived on Friday evening and was welcomed by new Gender minister, Frank Tumwebaze.

The Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya will preside over the ceremony of laying the Foundation Stone for the William Ruto Institute of African & Leadership Studies.

The university said the event is due today 21st December 2019.

It will kick off at 10:30am EAT, at Department of Performing Arts and Film Grounds, Pool Road, Makerere University.

Ruto will also deliver a lecture during the course of his visit.

The goals of the institute include:

i. Draw on the core strengths of diversity of disciplines and experience to develop and refine methodologies for the study of Africa;

ii. Develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning about Africa;

iii. Collaborate with similar Institutes in Africa and globally to deepen the understanding of Africa in all its complexity and evolve common perspectives on global issues;

iv. Strengthen relationships between academic and indigenous intellectuals as the basis for reclaiming indigenous knowledge, and integrate this into local communities;

v. Establish an environment for flourishing study and debate on African languages, arts, philosophies, social and political systems;

vi. Enhance and enrich intellectual and cultural life;

vii. Contribute to the discussion, analysis and resolution of critical developmental challenges facing African Societies through research and extension work.
