Judiciary probes registrar for assaulting journalists

Fred Waninda

The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Ms. Esta Nambayo, has tasked the Inspector of Courts to investigate within seven days reports that the Ag. Registrar (Planning and Development), Mr. Fred Waninda, assaulted some television journalists.

On Monday, Uganda Journalists Association [UJA] submitted a petition demanding that Deputy Judiciary registrar Mr. Waninda Fred be interdicted.

Waninda, the Commercial Court Acting Registrar in charge of Planning, Performance and Development, is accused of slapping a journalist and destroying his camera.

Eric Yiga, a reporter with Salt Media, on Wednesday went to cover a case where Waninda is accused of forging an agreement with an aim of grabbing land belonging to Charles Mulindwa, a resident of Buguju in Mukono district.

When court proceedings ended, journalists run out of court to record the complainants getting out.

Waninda slapped Hannington Kisakye from Smart 24 Television and his camera fell down breaking its lens.

Waninda then beat up Yiga before Counter Terrorism Unit police officers appeared and whisked away the registrar.

Yiga says they were later advised to report the matter to the Central Police Station in Kampala.

Judiciary spokesperson, Solomon Muyita, said they were closely working with Police and the complainants to establish the facts.
