The CCTV Project started 2019 and has two phases, first phase is intended to cover the surveillance systems for Kampala Metropolitan area and phase two is intended to cover surveillance systems for municipalities, highways and major towns.
Deputy police spokesperson ACP Polly Namaye said on Monday that the total number of cameras to be installed is 3233 and so far 60% (1940) of these have been installed.
The distance covered in laying fibre optic cables is 1065.709, trenched distance in kilometres is 795.37.
So far installation of cameras is ongoing in police divisions which include:- Katwe, CPS, Old Kampala, Jinja road, Wandegeya, Kajjansi, Nansana, Entebbe, Wakiso, Kawempe, Kira division, Kasubi.
Installations are expected to be concluded by 30th December 2019.
According to Namaye, these installations will aid the police in investigations of crimes and prosecution of offenders.
Training of the operators, commanders and technicians is already taking place.
“So far with the help of the cameras, we have had successes in 27 incidents around CPS Kampala, 8 incidents around Katwe, 06 around Old Kampala and 07 around Wandegeya,” she told press.
