Voting is underway at Makerere University for the next Guild President.
Final campaigns climaxed at the Freedom Square on Thursday with three main contenders being candidates under the “People Power Movement” banner.
People Power Movement is a pressure group associated with Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine who is also contesting for presidency in 2021 general elections.
The three main rivals in Makerere guild presidential race are; Julius Kateregga, a second year student of Bachelor of Arts with Education, Joshua Mukisa, a 3rd year law student and David Musiri, a second year student of Bachelor of Commerce.
They all campaigned wearing red berets and overalls and have a big chance of succeeding in the polls, according to information on the ground.
The ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] is represented by Andrew Julian Taliwaku, a 3rd year law student and Osbert Alinda, a second year Bachelor of Social Sciences.
Milly Namuddu, a second-year Bachelor of Education (Arts) student, is running under the flag of Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] hence dividing votes from the education faculty with Kateregga.
Others are; Umaru Wageya, a second-year student of Bachelor of Economics, George Mutumba popularly known as O-M-G, a second-year student of Development Studies and Emmanuel Agaba, a third-year student of Bachelor of Science in Conservation Forestry and Products Technology, Winter Nsimire Muhangi, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Donald Munanu, a second-year Bachelor of Education (Arts) student.
On the last day of campaigns, a bloody battle broke out between supporters of Mukisa who hails from Lumumba hall [Lumbox] and Kateregga who hails from Mitchell Hall.
Kateregga’s camp accuses Mukisa’s camp of attacking them after they started their match from Mitchell to University Hall, to Nsibirwa after to Livingstone where Mukisa’s camp tried to break them apart.
Kateregga continued to the Swimming Pool, then Complex hall, School of Education, Mary Stuart up to Makerere University CoNAS (College of Natural Sciences).
Mukisa’s camp that was at the Main Building allegedly attacked Kateregga’s camp forcing them to divert to the Main Library as an alternative route to enter the Freedom Square.
At the time, Bobi Wine’s brother Eddy Yaawe was moving with Kateregga in his open roof Super Custom car and his song “Tukigale” was playing.
Mukisa’s camp allegedly threw bottles, sticks and stones hitting Eddy Yaawe and Kateregga.
A battle broke out as Kateregga’s camp fought back to shield their candidate from stones.
Then military police moved in and ruthlessly dispersed the warring groups.
