Umeme masqueraders con Mityana residents

Local Council chairpersons from Mityana municipality have petitioned Parliament over lack of electricity in their area.

The Chairpersons who were led by their parliamentary representative, Hon. Herbert Zaake (Ind., Mityana Municipality) said that people in Mityana were being conned into fundraising for connection to the national power grid by people masquerading to be UMEME personnel.

“These people have cleared people’s land and gardens after taking their money; they put poles and collect them in the middle of the night,” Zaake said.

The LC1 chairpersons petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, today Wednesday 6 March 2019.

Zaake added that from the time Mityana attained municipality status, residents have been waiting for the government to connect them to the national power grid.

Ibra Lukyamuzi, the LC1 representative said that only 60 villages out of 144 are connected with electricity.

“The absence of electricity affects the smooth running of businesses as well as primary and secondary schools,” Lukyamuzi said, adding that “People from Butebi Landing-site on L. Wamala were conned of Shs3.6 million to connect them to power”.

Speaker Kadaga said she had visited the area and sought the intervention of government on the issue.

“I wrote to the Minister of Energy demanding quick action, I am surprised to note that some impostors bring forms asking people to pay money before they disappear,” she said.

Kadaga instructed the Minister of Energy to report back to the House on the matter within a period of two weeks.
