Okodi Deogratius Given, whose studies are being sponsored by opposition figure Kizza Besigye, has been admitted to Uganda Martyrs’ Secondary School, Namugongo.
Okodi is the brother to Deogloria Ejang who got the best PLE results in Northern Uganda and had failed to join Secondary School.
Their Otuke District based parents- Community School teachers, who are essentially volunteers, could not meet Okodi and Ejang’s fees.
“I responded by contacting the parents, offering to cover the (S 1) 1st term needs, and putting out an appeal on twitter for more contributions towards this bright girl’s education. The girl had been admitted at Mt. St. Mary’s College, Namagunga,” Besigye noted.
Besigye sent transport money to Mr Bosco Ogwang (dad) to bring her to Kampala and process her admission.
He also availed the dad Shs 900,000- needed as deposit to the school in order to get admission documents.
A Corporate donor, KK Coaches, contacted the girl’s dad and the Otuke Woman MP Hon Silvia Akello offering to sponsor the girl for the 4 years of Secondary education.
“All this happened very first on the very day the dad got the admission papers from Namagunga. A cheque covering tuition for 4 years was immediately paid and all Deogloria’s shopping needs covered.”
When Ogwang and Hon Akello visited Besigye, to bring the good news regarding Ejang’s sponsorship, they also introduced another equally deserving case.
Her brother Okodi (Ogwang’s first born child), who also excelled through primary school with 4 points, has completed S4 on a school scholarship of Merryland High School, Entebbe.
He got an aggregate of 11 in 8 subjects. “Since I didn’t have to pay all the 1st term fees for Deogloria, I offered Shs 700,000-, as a fees deposit needed to get admission papers,” Besigye noted.
A bank account has now been opened in Centenary Bank, Lira, jointly managed by Ogwang and Hon Silvia Akello.
“The purpose of this post is to inform all friends and people of good will as above and to further appeal that we come together to render support to Deogratius.”
“No doubt, these children are God’s gift to all of us. This is why education should be publicly funded,” Besigye said.
“Contributions can be deposited to the following account: Bank: Centenary Bank, Lira Branch. Account Tittle: Ogwang Bosco and Akello Silvia. Account No: 3202044473.”
