Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] Deputy President for Northern, Okumu Ronald Reagan, is seriously sick, edge.ug has learnt.
The MP for Aswa county and commissioner of Parliament of Uganda, is currently nursing severe back pain although medics are doing all they can to make him better.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Betty Aol Ocan, told edge.ug on Monday that Okumu’s pain stems from an accident he had over 10 years ago.
In January 2006, Okumu and his wife, Jane Okumu, were seriously injured in a road accident at Mayenje village near River Kafu on the Kampala-Gulu highway.
The then acting Police Commissioner for Traffic, Wilson Ahimbisibwe, said Okumu and his wife were traveling to Kampala from Gulu, lost control of his car as he attempted to overtake a bus.
The car veered off the road and overturned several times. The MP and his wife both sustained serious injuries and were admitted at Kiryandongo Hospital in Masindi.
Apparently, Okumu was supposed to proceed to India for better medical treatment after the incident.
“I visited him yesterday but one. He has severe back pain, going all the way to his neck,” Aol told edge.ug.
She said when Okumu recently went to China with a delegation of Ugandan MPs; he ended up climbing a hill.
“He climbed the hill in very cold weather. This prompted the old problem to return. He is in a lot of pain,” Aol added.
She said while in China, Okumu was given a massage but it didn’t help.
He was advised to try therapy as well as undergo a surgery.
When he returned to Uganda, Okumu decided to check in at Kampala International Hospital [IHK] but his wife opted for home care.
“He is at his home now. He is on treatment. My prayer is that he improves without going for surgery,” Aol said.
