At least 14 people were killed and four others injured in a fatal road crash at Lwera Swamp in Kalungu District on Monday night.

According to the Uganda Police, the accident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on August 3, 2026, at Kamunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp along the Kampala–Masaka Highway.

The crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UA 662AQ, and a Sino truck, registration number UBS 040F, which was transporting sand.

Four other people sustained injuries in the crash, including two occupants from the taxi and two from the truck. They were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene after the collision, and police said efforts to trace and arrest the suspect are ongoing.

The latest tragedy adds to a growing number of fatal road crashes recorded on Uganda’s highways, with police continuing to urge motorists to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to reduce accidents.
