The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, published once a year, assesses institutions worldwide across 13 performance indicators in five areas: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%) and industry income (2.5%).

This year more than 1 500 institutions were ranked in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, across 93 countries and regions with a total of 63 Universities from Africa, and eleven (11) being members of the RUFORUM Network.

The increase in demand for higher education in Africa demands that universities in Africa continue to demonstrate the value for the investments in Higher education by consistently showing their relevance in teaching, research, contribution to the labour force, community engagement and internationalising their institutions through academic mobility and exchange programmes.

Even though controversial, University rankings have remained the common means of informing the public about the status of universities in teaching and research.
