The national army is returning Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel on Kampala streets.
Army spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso said the move follows petitions by local leaders who say crime has since increased.
LDUs were withdrawn from streets after the population complained of senseless shootings and brutality.
They were taken for refresher training which some have already completed.
Byekwaso said those who completed training will help police in operations and curtailing criminals.
They will only operate at night and none shall be allowed to work during daytime.
